Record high number of International Students in Australia

Student Visa

Despite the 16.5% decline in the number of student visas lodged in the 2020 financial, the number of students in Australia reached record high with 555,310 students in the country on 30 June 2020.

This was driven by a 10.2% increase on onshore student visa applications.

India students alone increased their onshore applications by 39.9% surpassing China and are now the #1 country in student visas lodged in Australia.

Brazils remains stable in #4, behind India, China and Nepal.

One of the most interesting data from the report released by the Department of Home Affairs is the unprecedented overall 100% grant rate for applications onshore from 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020.

Despite the high approval rates, the processing time a typical student application took to be finalised went from 47 days to 65 on the period of 1 April to 30 June 2020 versus previous year.

485 Temporary Graduate Visa

On 30 June 2020, there were 100,239 Temporary Graduate visa holders in Australia, 9.2% more than the year before.

There is a strong connection between Student Visa and Graduate Visa, with India. China and Nepal keeping their status as the #1, #2 and #3 source countries for 485 visa applications, respectively. Despite being the top 4 country in Students visas lodged, Brazil is only the #11 country in Temporary Graduate visas lodged, representing 1.7% of total 485 visas lodged.

Of the 485 Temporary Graduate visa holders who went on to obtain another visa, 44.5% lodged a skilled visa while 39.6% lodged another student visa.
